As previous reviews mentioned, this is a large park associated with Kings Dominion amusement park. (Try to find a "real" campground map; all you get is info on the amusement park.) It is less than a mile from I-95, but we did not hear road noise; roller coaster was not bad, and the trains did not run often at night. There are a lot of shade trees, and the tenting sites are large and shaded, though most were as far from the one bath house as you could get. Registration was easy and fast, our Good Sam club having made reservations in advance. However, the bathrooms/showers definitely needed attention. Shower floors and walls were clean, but don't look up. Gunk in ceiling vents was not encouraging. Also, they have no changing area for the showers so there is one bench and 6 hooks; it's like back in junior high. Toilets were clean, but one stall had minimal toilet paper on Saturday and by Sunday afternoon still had not had new paper added. Were they 'really' cleaned? Or did they just pass a mop over the floor? But my biggest complaint is with the hidebound, rigid rules and the lack of common sense displayed by management. My wife and I went to the pool with a couple of foam noodles to use for exercise on our arthritic knees and joints. We were told, no noodles. Why--because it's a rule. I asked to see management. The manager showed up and said we could not take the noodles in. Why? Because he had to support his life guard. But WHY no noodles? It's the rule. I pointed out it wasn't posted. That's when the lifeguard said it was posted....at the water park in Kings Dominion. Ahhh there is the issue. The rules for the water park--super slides, surf machines, crowded floating rivers--are the same as for the relatively small swimming pool at the campground located over a half mile from the park entrance. Where is the common sense in that! And the manager, rather than challenging the lack of common sense, or requesting a waiver for the park, backs a young life guard who feels he needs to keep to the letter of the rule posted far away. Add to that, there were a total of 4 other people in the pool at the time. Bad enough, and enough to make us not want to go back. But in checking with our club, one member took her grandchildren to the pool on Sunday morning and the pool was closed. Why? Because the swimming pool at the campground has to have the same hours as the water park at Kings Dominion. Apparently management is only interested in getting the money and people into the amusement park and doesn't really care about campers. Now, if you want somewhere close to stay to go to the amusement park, this might be an OK spot. But if it is camping experience you are looking for close to Richmond, this is NOT a good place to stay. And if you are traveling I-95 and looking for an overnight, you would do far better staying at the Flying J a few miles north or the Bass Outlet a few miles south, both with better bathrooms and both at NO charge.

I am always amused when someone says the staff was rude and yet everyone else has nice things to say. I wonder what REALLY happened. Our experience with the staff was marvelous. They were helpful and caring. When I had a problem at our site with water buildup after the rain, they sent someone with extra gravel to keep me from floating away. We had friends supposed to come in Friday and they had problems with work and couldn't make it. They originally called to see how late they could check in. Our friends got a call about 10:30 PM asking where they were, if everything was OK. Yes, staff was concerned and wanted to make sure someone was available if they were coming in very late. Downside to campground is the layout of "buddy sites." They could have arranged them better so more double sites would have awnings facing each other. (This is a really minor point. Does not detract from the overall excellence of the park.) Other issue is the "point" is without trees so very hot and can be windy. It can also be a bit swampy if there is a lot of rain. All the other comments are correct: signage is sometime hard to see, sites can be close together, lots of seasonals who all seem to be very friendly and helpful, great place to fish and crab, lots of activities for kids, good pools, excellent store. We have been here before and will return.

We camped here with a Good Sam Chapter. Our sites were grouped on the top of the hill, close together. As others have mentioned, these are called "pull through" BUT, only if you are the first one in. If you are second, you will be staring into the back of another rig. Since we were all together, it wasn't so bad, but since we were the 2nd ones in, we would have preferred to see mountains and scenery, not the back end of someone's coach. Sites were level and utilities easy to reach. However, due to tight nature of the sites side to side, fire pits set in the ground were close to the picnic table and/or close to the rig and awning. We didn't mind the drive up, and others in the group had bigger rigs and had no complaints. Management was good and helpful, check-in fast and easy. Sites along the creek (tents and pop-ups) looked good and there were sites along the lake that looked nice. Some tent sites had NO level ground, but overall, it was very acceptable. Lots of shade trees and cool breezes on the mountain top (@1100 ft), so very enjoyable.

THIS is what camping is all about. 30+ years ago, I recall private sites being like this. Lots of space between sites, sites were level and large (at least the ones for motorhomes) and water and electric in good shape. The electric boxes even had a date and intitials of the last inspection, is it was only a year ago, so bravo to the maintenance crew. We were also impressed with the rangers and their constant patrols; saw the ranger drive by at least every 2-3 hours. When there was a problem one evening, rangers were there on the spot and quieted a group of visitors down and made sure we ALL had a good camping experience. For us, the delight of being able to swim when we wanted and where we wanted was wonderful. Now, if you have a tent, some of the sites are not so level. If you have a chance to look first, I'd advise checking out the site before settling on one. Which leads to the reservation system. It can be confusing and frustrating. They said ALL electric sites were booked, yet we saw a number that weren't used this past weekend. In talking with a ranger, he said that has become a problem and even though the reservation system says all sites booked, they have open lots on the major holiday weekends and they are unable to cancel and issue those to folks arriving and hoping to stay. Moral--reserve early in the season for the weekends you want. We will definitely return and bring bicycles for pedaling the bike/hiking trails.

We pulled in late with no reservations and self registered. Sites were very level and large. After setting up, we took showers in family restrooms, which makes sense, as it increases ability to get folks in/out. I needed to get online and found four links for the park; they have a booster routing system so no matter where you are, you will have good reception. Next morning, we were leaving and I stopped to chat with the owner. Very nice and friendly. As we walked the mobile home/RV park, residents were friendly and willing to chat. Several offered suggestions for places to visit or good places to shop. If you like to bike or hike, this campground backs on hundreds of acres of government land for this. All in all, an excellent experience. Yes, they are Passport America and rate is valid in off season. Roads are paved and easy to manuever. Definitely willing to go back and relax.

We have always found most state parks to be excellent. Florida is no exception. The Stephen Foster Cultural Center State Park was lovely with great bathhouse, large shaded sites, lots of space between sites, and plenty to do. (Well, maybe not for kids other than the playground.) They have a museum dedicated to Stephen Foster and a large carillon that chimes the quarter hour and 3-4 times a day plays about 10 minutes of Stephen Foster tunes. We sat on a bench under trees and listened to one concert of bells. The first weekend of each month is Artists month and the cultural center had blacksmiths, wood carvers, potters, painters, jewelers and musicians. We had no problem with bugs and our son was able to put his tent on our pull through site at no additional cost. If you can get in, this is a great spot to stay and see the area.

We camped here as part of the annual Samboree. We were impressed with many part of our experiences: wonderful staff that was friendly and helpful, great sites (but they alternated our rigs so we had a lot of room; in middle of summer may be more crowded), great facilities from the activities center to the pools and beach, well stocked store with both food and camping supplies as well as gifts, and superb rally/convention center. Negatives include: shower is controlled by a pull cord to regulate amount and temperature of water--it was broken and therefore not easy to use. And it was still not fixed the next day after cleaning crew had been in. Wi-Fi does NOT work; I sat right under antenna and could not pick up. Others had similar issue. NO fire pits for most campers and I did not see anywhere we could go for a community fire. Bathhouse/restrooms are few and far between. I could not understand why they would put them in the middle of permanent sites when those folks are hooked to sewers and water. Finally, given the size of the park and capacity, I suspect it could be very crowded in summer if operating at close to full. Manager is excellent at public relations and I hope if he reads this he will take steps to fix. Obviously this camp won their national award for a reason and if you have a family and want activity with lots of others, this is the place for you.

The sites were fine--deep, wide, easy to get to. The utilities were properly placed and the pull through sites had left/right options on the sites so you could pull in from either side. Almost good security (the pedestrian gate wasn't locked) and lots for adults and kids to do at Pedro Land. The pool is available to campers and it's only a short walk to the hotel. We stayed here 3 years ago without our RV at the hotel and found it a wonderful retro 50's room--but clean, comfortable, and cheap. So we don't have a bias against the place. We also stayed 2 years ago with our RV and I gave them a 7. I had a better site this time, the trains weren't so bothersome, but the place is a bit long in the tooth, both campground and property for Pedro. They do not currently have the hot tub as patrons abused it and broke it. Ladies showers apparently had kids playing in them and water was standing in the changing area. We had shade, minimal bugs, quiet, and reasonable TV reception over the air. All in all , not bad. For a safe, clean, easy spot to stop on a long trip on I-95, I'd say take a chance and try. Just ask for a site away from the sewage plant (approximately #26-38).

We stayed here a year ago and had reservations. This time we took a chance and had no problem getting in, though they were very full. Again, most gracious welcome, popcorn and paper, and escort to the very level site. We had been on the road all day so found the service welcome. We used the hot tub early next morning and then were on our way. As before, the road noise was an issue, but not overly offensive. The advertised wi-fi was not powerful enough to reach us and we were within 3 lots of the tower. This needs to be fixed. We saw similar poles throughout the campground, but did not have a chance to talk to the manager to find out if it was symptomatic or a glitch for us. They do have a computer in the clubhouse for anyone to use. Still a 9 due to road noise and wi-fi issue, but definitely a place to stay, particularly if you are traversing Florida to the north.

This was our 2nd visit. Last year we stayed for 2 nights, this time for 5. When we finally retire, we sincerely want to make this a winter stay of 1-2 months or more. As a previous review said, the town gets a 10. GREAT seafood and extremely friendly folks all around. Short trip to Port St. Joe and groceries are very cheap (by DC standards). So why a 9? They have Wi-Fi but it is so spotty, it is extremely frustrating. They have cable (free, so why worry about satellite?) but some channels were fuzzy. And yes, they are constantly working on improvements. While we were there, a new pump went in for the pool, a new washer in the laundry, and they were working on fixing the A/C for the clubhouse. Little things, but they add up. They did fog for mosquitoes one night, but the recent flooding created swarms throughout the low lands. All in all, the good FAR out weighs any negatives. Oh, yes, come in to the campground at an angle and you won't scrape. Same for going out.

We camped here with a Good Sam club. As mentioned previously, there are 2 RV areas: new and old. We were in the older area. The pluses are lots of shade,quiet, clean restrooms and shower and the ability to take advantage of the resort amenities. Negatives are: steep roads to get in, some tight turns, cable TV hook ups require long lengths of cord, sites not level and need a bit of work, and electric boxes looking old and in some cases, have burn marks around the plugs. The new sites are beautiful, but NO trees. You will pay more for concrete pads, wooden furniture, gas grill. You will be close to one another, and in the summer, very hot with all the concrete and no trees. We did not get hustled for a tour and found the older area to our liking. Several of the members of our club are members, and I can see why they enjoy it. It is inexpensive, convenient, and a great place to relax. It will take work to fix the older site and get the score up to an 8 or 9. Newer area would probably score higher, but you would also be paying more.

This was our 3rd visit, finally able to stay in warm weather. This place has only gotten better. The new sites are lovely, around the lake. There are swings to sit and rest as well as benches, landscaping is well done, and staff very helpful and gracious. Our site was almost perfectly level and all services placed properly for hookup. Only issue was taste of water; we used a water filter and it still had a slightly metallic taste. These fine folks had signed up for Passport America so our rate reflected this. We were grateful for the great deal. But in discussion with the owner, they are going to drop the association after a very short time due to stupid, arrogant, pig-headed campers who have abused the Passport name. One camper came with a club for a rally (regular price) then demanded the Passport rate. Another camper called for reservations and demanded the Passport rate. Owner explained that the rate was only honored when the person arrived, presuming space available. If everything was full, they would not accept Passport. The camper was rude and belligerent. So now the owners have decided it is not worth the hassle. They will still take Good Sam, AARP, etc. but at a much smaller discount. What a shame that a few bad apples have given the Passport America franchise a bad name and ruined it for others. With all that, I told the owners we would still return, even at full price. It is really that good!

We have camped here before and the state parks are EXCELLENT. This was a spring shakedown getting ready for the summer camping season, and gave us a chance to camp next to friends with the same purposes. Site was reasonably level though friend had more problems. Pea gravel on area on side of coach could accomodate tents and was cleaned prior to our arrival and neatly groomed. Registration is easy and ranger very friendly. Saw rangers drive through on regular basis. Not a lot to do this time of year but hike through woods to lake was nice. Outside of park are several winerys and some reasonable places to eat. Dump station on way out has access on 2 sides to facilitate crowds, and was level and easy to use. Biggest issue is need to level coach in sites with more unevenness than would be expected.

Let's start with the pluses: great people to deal with, easy choice of sites, wonderful tenting areas, right on an arm of Lake Anna, staff quick to help and correct problems (just tell them the restroom is dirty and it's tended), well stocked camp store, great views and good water with mini-beach areas for swimming. We checked out the area before deciding to spend a weekend and are not sorry we did. Met great folks, had relaxing time, and enjoyed ourselves. Now for the minuses: few level sites for RVs, hookups shared with others, dump station on top of hill, road in to campground (and up to dump site) could be improved, some campers let dogs run and leave messes where ever, electric box had no breaker plus boxes were older and loose, a few folks were not observant of quiet hours. In summary, this is a rustic site with many seasonal/permanent trailers (at the back of the property) where they welcome you and you can relax. But do NOT expect state park level sites with well maintained hook-ups. If you are into tenting, this is DEFINITELY a place to consider. If you have a larger RV, you might want to look first. The pictures in the web site are excellent and very representative of what we experienced. We would go back on a non-holiday week or weekend to enjoy the people, the lake and the ambiance.

We camped in the "newer" portion and sitges were large, level, and well tended. I did notice the 30amp plug on my site was a bit cracked, but it worked. Pool passes (1/person/number of nights of stay) were provided. Pool is a car drive away, but large and well guarded. Biggest complaint is one of SYSTEM: we requested site next to friend and were not given one. We had to provide OUR reservation #, their reservation #, names, and dates. Then when we pulled in, were told, "We don't do that." Funny, they did it at a different state park. Pocahontas has "buddy sites" that accomodate 3 RVs in one grouping. We were not offered those because only 2 of us. Yet the sites went unused this weekend. That seems counter to good business sense!

We pulled in late afternoon with reservation. First thing owner did was warn us our step was out. We discovered it wouldn't retract and he quickly called a friend to see if he could come and help fix it. We got the complimentary cappuccino and slushy, with popcorn, and were escorted to site. Before I could finish setting up, friend arrived and worked on step for over 30 minutes. He wouldn't accept a penny! Real hospitality and helpfulness. Only issue was some road noise. But a hot tub after a long drive, VERY level site, all amenities, and wonderful location make this a 9. Road noise can't be helped; otherwise, a 10. (And having stayed in a few WalMarts, the road noise is truly minimal.)

We escaped the bugs at St Joe State Park and landed in Mexico Beach. Overall, found the beach much nicer for swimming than the state park and access to eateries and amenities much better. But the campground was SUPER. We had a nice site with trees, full hook-ups, and great staff. Restrooms were very clean and shower, though small, was cleaned regularly. The pool was exceptional and clean. Lots of family friendly things for kids to do. Were there problems? Some. Roads were dirt with some sand, making for dusty times when rigs rolled through. Also, sites were on grass/sand. This was not always level, but easily remedied. The fitness center got trashed in the past by some kids, and they are not rushing to replace it. Why should they? Raise rates to cover that?? We would definitely stay there again and staff and guests all were friendly and helpful. Passport rate is great, but even at full rate it would have been a good spot to stay.

Yeah, yeah, beach is #1, beautiful, yada, yada. Now let's discuss the campground. We stayed at Shady Pines, not the Ocean Breeze. Road in is potholed and rough, scrapped bottom on a couple. Campsites were variable in size; if you have a big rig, go to Ocean Breeze. We fit in and had to level a bit, but not bad. Lovely shade and table, fire ring, and spot to hang clothes. Bathhouses were fine and they have showers coming off the beach to rinse. But the BUGS!!! No-seeums and gnats were thick in early May. I could take it (even though legs look like I have the pox) but my wife was allergic and got really sick. We had to leave a day early (though they will refund the day, no penalty.) We were disappointed, to say the least. We went to the beach to swim and discovered that it is fairly steep getting in and not as gentle as beaches in Jacksonville or Daytona. Might be OK for adults, but could be a problem for young children. Added to that was the desire to go snorkeling. Everyone said the Bay was great. What they fail to tell you is that the water is so shallow, you have to wade over 1/2 mile to get to waist deep water. So that bummed us out. Now the bugs and shallow water are not the fault of the park or the state. So give the park a 10 for beauty, remoteness, and "Old Florida" experience. But with bad roads inside park, difficulty getting into some sites, steep ocean beach, and the inability to enjoy what we hoped to do, I have to go with an 8. If we camped here again, it would be in non-bug time and at Ocean Breeze. But think I can get the same experience and still do the snorkeling elsewhere.

Quiz--What is the difference between staying here and at the Wal-Mart 7 miles North? Answer-$28. Yes, you can have hookups and a dump station. But if you are overnighting only looking for someplace safe and quiet to sleep, then there is no difference. Need a shower? Well, they were clean, but on the men's side, there were 3 and NO place to hang up clothes or towel. So you put them on bench across the room and then went in the shower. Road noise can be tolerated, but it is closer than most Wal-Marts. So if you want to pull in early, use the microwave, watch TV, and maybe have a campfire that night, this is a good deal. If you want someplace to spend 3-5 days and explore the area, there are state parks and other parks not as tightly packed or noisy. And if you just want some shut-eye on a long trip, this is not where you need to spend your money. All the previous comments hit the issues precisely.

Don't understand the previous entry about sewers; this park only has a dump station. There is also no water hookups but a water station available on check-in to fill the RV. Finally, this is posted at Centerville, but there are similar reviews under Manassas, so read carefully and choose. This was our 3rd stay here. Pull through sites are large and can accomodate the largest of rigs (we saw several this weekend camping)but the hookups are on the wrong side. So you may need an extension if you park too far out. The sites were lovely, natural, and large. ALL sites have picnic table, grill, and fire ring. Noise from planes and shooting center are noticed, and given the holiday weekend with Rolling Thunder on the Interstate, yes, we heard them all. But it was not offensive. One thing we noticed this time that I don't recall from before was an excellent area map with all the shopping indicated, from supermarkets to discount stores to medical clinics. Really helpful if you are unfamiliar and wondering where to go for services/ameneties. Down side (and the reason I can't give a 10) is the previously mentioned no water and no sewer hookups. I can live without either for a weekend trip, but if I were here longer, I'd miss those aspects. Also, though the showers had separate partioned area for changing with a shower curtain to keep the area dry, there were no hooks to hang up clothes. As I said, this was our 3rd time here and I am sure we will go back!

It is with reluctance I give this park a 6. There is a real dicotomy here. Start with the Pluses: Great location, quiet, recently part of Passport America (hence low rate), Wi-Fi (but only at picnic pavillion near cave entrance), lots of shade and room for kids, tent sites, lots to do at campground with caverns and woodworking and living history displays, close to Mentone and Fort Payne. Minuses: tight sites, some significant leveling issues, tight turns on gravel roads, steep grade in/out, dump station not on level surface and in disrepair, lack of hot water in showers (tepid at best, pilot light went out we were told), most of the sites could use some attention of some sort. We stopped here to visit the area, and were happy with choice. Take time to visit caverns and chat with family members. If you have PA, it is a GREAT deal. But if you have a big rig, are not comfortable on narrow roads, have trouble backing, then this may not be your cup of tea. I really want to see them succeed and keep this facility open. With the temporary closure of State Park campground for renovations, hopefully increased business will provide capital to make the improvements needed to bring this up to a 8 or 9 with out a lot of effort.

Used this as a stop-over on a trip to see the Panhandle. It is everything advertised, both the good and bad. Small but clean restrooms, GREAT ocean views, fish pier, full hook ups including cable, and flat, level sites. Down side is tight spaces, not lots of room between sites, and no store, or supplies on site. However, folks were all very friendly, 3 campground hosts on site, and those who were there for long term enjoyed the fishing, boating, or relaxing. It is close to a number of small towns, including Aplachicola, and there is great shopping and eating in these areas. We would stop here again.

This park is laid out well and has ready access to the ocean, to a small lake, and to bike trails. The camp store was well stocked and security seemed very good. Tents were mingled with RVs and trailers. Shades trees covered most sites and so even in the heat of day, it was cool. Down side, and reason for less than 10: a) Getting a hold of them was difficult. I called continually for over 5 hours to get a reservation and since it was long distance, that was a pain. b) Roads in the campground are narrow and winding. We have a 26' RV and went into a 40' site. Have no idea how bigger rigs would get in and out. c) Since you are not supposed to bring in your own firewood, we bought ours at the camp store. It was pine and very green. Had trouble getting it lit. Overall it was a great spot and wish we had longer to stay. For proximity to beaches and Jacksonville, it is great, even though it may be a bit high priced considering the condition of roads and sites.

Stopped here to visit a friend who lives on Hilton Head. No problems getting reservation and finding the campground. Check in very smooth and picked a site near pool. We were warned about poor WiFi reception further from the front. We were about half way back and could not pick it up. That was the only issue we found less than perfect. Although expensive, there are only 2 RV sites on island and if we return to HH, we would stay here again.

Camped here based on friend's recommendation. It was early spring and not many campers. Grounds are wonderful with lots of biking trails and the pool (summer only) looks like fun for the kids. Our concern was lack of staff or attention. Dumpsters were FULL on Thursday night and fuller on Sunday when we pulled out. Showers are large and reasonably clean, but the hooks for hanging your clothes leave clothes exposed to shower spray, so they still get wet; they need a shower curtain or divider to protect the clothes. They have a nature center and CCC Museum, but no staff, not even on weekends. Sites are not all level in the older section. Road signage is difficult to find at dusk (though park entrance is very clear once you get there.) On the plus side, rangers we talked with were very helpful and friendly. Addition across the road will be great. ALL roads recently paved and the newer section of campground had level, paved pads. Campground is convenient to sightseeing in Richmond or Petersburg. Woods are lovely, dark and deep; stars at night are big and bright.

We spent 2 nights and the previous reviews are clearly dated. Yes, lots of permanent seasonals. Yes, they have golf carts. The sites are well kept up and as previously stated, everyone is very friendly and welcoming. WiFi is for a fee, but is available. Shaded sites are not good for large rigs, but newer sites closer to the river are in open area and can accommodate large rigs. If campground is not crowded, could pull through as well. We found pools (all 3) open. (Large, deep pool/shallower pool with water slide/gated kiddie pool for toddlers) Gate was initially locked but asked at store and they quickly opened. Store hours and pool hours posted at store door and never a problem. Store is WELL stocked for camping supplies and owners very helpful. Restrooms very clean. Bathhouse as a number of toilet/sink/shower combo rooms and is new. Lots of activities for all ages during summer season. Bingo on Saturday night when we were there. Problems: signs to get there not clear; but directions on web site or by phone very clear. Road into camp gravel and had deep dip; scrapped motorcycle carrier both in and out. (This could be fixed). Sites close together, but not offensive. We would stay again if in the area.

From check-in to check-out, operation is smooth. We stayed at Red Oak and found site reasonably level, large, and shaded. Bathhouse was easy walk and showers were family style. Plenty to do if you enjoy nature. Checked with canoe livery and they would transport our canoes for very reasonable fee. However, it rained and we opted to head to Appomattox Court House for visit. Fire wood available for $3 for 10 large hunks, seemed reasonable. Only two issues and not fault of campground: 1) had large bee/wasps eating sap from tree at site and some got into camper. 2) We wanted to camp near/next to friends and there seems to be no way in automated reservation system to indicate this. Ranger suggested calling after reservations were in an well before arrival; they would place us close together. It's a bit far from N.VA, but well worth the trip.

Camped here over 4th of July. The staff and management were most helpful, friendly, and informative. We had a site right on the stream and it was plenty big. We saw big rigs, 5th wheels, and trailers that all fit in fine. All that has been said about the ambiance of the campsite and town are true; it was lovely and relaxing. On the Saturday night after the 4th, they repeated the fireworks show they had done on the previous Saturday. It was a delightful exhibit of sparklers and music that lasted almost a 1/2 hour. A number of folks from town came down to enjoy. All in all a great spot to go, relax and spend some time. Why only 9 instead of 10? The sites were not "tight" but were close. We could put the awning out and still have room, but the folks on either side were closer than we have had at state campground sites. The road in is narrow, but using caution and reasonable speed, there are no problems. We echo all the positive comments earlier and scoff at the negative ones. This is truly a great spot to spend time and see the valley. (And don't miss the chance to go the a wine tasting at the local winery!)

Second time camping and as lovely and peaceful as we remembered. Some minor issues detract: low water pressure at our site so we had to fill the tank and use the pump (took a LONG time to fill) and similar low pressure at the bathhouse shower. Not all sites had low pressure, but several did. Swimming pool was wonderful and we noted that the guards seemed to know the young kids and interact with them, which seems like a good idea. We hiked to Fossil Beach and did some beach combing but didn't find the desired shark's teeth. Oh well, maybe next time. Sites are shady, spacious and mostly level. Highly recommend this to those who don't need high energy theme parks with arcades, cartoon characters parading around, and lots of noise.

This was our second visit. Campground is lovely but noticed several issues. They can put 2 rigs next to each other, but the posts only have 1-30 amp and 2-20 amp plugs. If you pull in 2nd, you may not get a 30 amp circuit. Also, have a "Y" connector for water as they have just one outlet so you need to share. Biggest issue this time was the crowd there for a Memorial weekend "Jubilee". Lots of partying and music. But the music went until 2:30 AM. If they had quit at 11PM (quiet hour) and then continued on a smaller scale or without amplifiers, it would have been OK. We found it less than restful. The owner DID warn us ahead of time, but we had no idea of the volume of sound or the lateness of the partying. We DO intend to go back, but on a quieter weekend. They have a web site now with some good pictures of the campground, but need to add info. They have a lot of special weekends that could be highlighted. All in all, still a great spot to camp with a family or just to relax. Only, don't do it on Memorial Day weekend unless you are also a party animal.

We wanted a place close to Daytona to see some friends. This is a Passport America park and so we got a good deal. At check-in, there was some confusion as to rate, but quickly and without issue corrected to the PA rate and we were escorted to our site. Trees abound in the hub we were in and yet did not prevent awnings or slides from being out. Had full hook-up and a concrete patio. Packed sand to park on, but actually very level. Walked around and saw many seasonals and some full timers with park models scattered around. Nothing in our hub looked tacky or run down. Impressed with the amenities--mini golf, tennis, wonderful heated pool great patio. In looking at camp calendar, they have lots to do for campers from hot dog and soda nights to hay rides to karaoke nights. Obviously the seasonals have a good time. This place could rate an 8 or 9 but for a couple of issues/distractors-- one was not mentioned before--road noise. You sit less than a mile from I-95 and a few hundred yards from US-1. You can hear a dull whine from the traffic all night if you have windows open or are sitting out. The laundry room was not the cleanest and 5 minutes on the dryer for a quarter is a bit much. Heard several of the local campers say they take their laundry out rather than use the one on-site. Crumbling concrete patios seemed prevalent. And yes, they have Wi-Fi, but for a fee. It was about $3 per day. I can drive to a coffee shop or truck stop to get free Wi-Fi if needed; the price was too steep. If noise doesn't bother you, it's not a bad place for a few days or longer. It IS close to many places, including Daytona Speedway. And though the tent sites are beautiful, they are as far from the bath house and bathrooms as you can get. Aren't they the ones who need that service most??

We first saw the park when we purchased our Motorhome in 2004. Yes, we took the Driver's Confidence course and "drove" through the campground with the instructor to learn how to maneuver a big rig. These courses ONLY drive in the afternoon for about 2-3 hours, NOT all day. I found the previous reviews insulting, degrading, and questionable. Level sites? I don't have levelers on my 26' rig and when I checked my level it was darn near level. Yes, it sloped toward the street; where would you want water to stay--on your lot or go down to the drain? As to meals, come on folks, they are NOT provided for your benefit; they are a bonus for the hundreds a day who come to look at and buy a motor home. We had 3 meals this time and all were tasty, filling and, oh, yes, I asked for seconds and got it. If you came for the food and were unhappy, please post and let folks know where you CAN get a big buffet with your campground and pay less than $30 a nnight, with pool, hot tub, wifi, newspaper, free cable, etc. It is billed as a Rally Park and not a destination campground. Everyone I talked with around the pool agreed the sites are tight but they could get in, security was great, staff was very helpful, amenities were superb, and they were happy. Why only a 9 then? No trees for shade, wifi is currently (emphasis currently) not always available in campsite and you may have to walk 50 yards to the clubhouse to get reception, and sites are close together. Would we stay again? I surely hope so, in a year, when we upgrade to a larger RV and stay there to check it out.

This is a Passport America camp (1 night) so longer stay would be $24/Night. It has a heated pool, jacuzzi, complimentary ice, complimentary computer in the pavilion, fax and copy service, 3 acre lake, free kayaking, canoeing, and paddle boats on the lake. Sites were sandy, but reasonably large. We had no trouble leveling. LOTS of shade trees and wonderful tent sites around the lake. Large number of seasonals and some full timers. Birds and nature walks were plentiful. This park is next to a state park and close to the Gulf (though you need to drive there.) Management is making lots of changes and we hope to get back next year. I expect to see significant improvements. Why only a 7? Ad said Wi-Fi but I couldn't hook up; not a lot of direction signs in park to find the pool (it's at the back behind a house!) and generally looked a little shabby when we were there. The web site may not work so you would have to call direct to 708-494-3464 or 352-596-6010. I would stay again for 3-5 days to take in Weeki Wachee, go to the Gulf, and enjoy nature. Not sure I'd want to spend longer. But then, if the improvements come, it may be great. If you are a tenter, this is definitely a great spot to go.

What would it take to give this place a higher score? The sites were fine--deep, wide, easy to get to. The utilities were properly placed and the pull through sites had left/right options on the sites so you could pull in from either side. Almost good security (the pedestrian gate wasn't locked) and lots for adults and kids to do at Pedro Land. The pool and hot tub are available to campers and it's only a short walk to the hotel. They even supply tools and have a changing room. (Bring your own lock for the locker.) We stayed here a year ago without our RV at the hotel and found it a wonderful retro 50's room--but clean, comfortable, and cheap. So we don't have a bias against the place. However, our site was right up against the sewage treatment plant and it was NOISY. Like camping next to a giant waterfall. (No odor detected, thank heavens.) And for security of the plant, they have large spot lights shining all night on the treatment plant. Then add the train noises. Apparently they are required to blow the horn prior to Pedro Land and keep tooting until they are well past. Perhaps because they had been backed up by weather, but the trains ran every 20 minutes all night. No, I could not get used to it. Yes, it cut through our artificial waterfall sound. If I had been in a different site, away from the treatment plant, where it was quieter and darker, I might have been tempted to give it an 8. But for a safe, clean, easy spot to stop on a long trip on I-95, I'd say take a chance and try. Just ask for a site away from the sewage plant (approximately #26-38).

This is a campground with a lot of promise and will be improved by the end of 2007, according to the manager. Sandy Oaks is a roomy, quiet park. The 3200 sq. ft. clubhouse has a kitchen and new fireplace. A new heated pool is adjacent to the clubhouse and over 5000 sq. ft. of deck surrounds the pool and clubhouse. Half the park is an undeveloped wooded area. There are numerous trees throughout the park. Of particular note for bikers is the closeness to the Withlacoochee Trail located within one quarter mile which offers a 46-mile stretch of railroad track that was converted to a paved recreational trail suitable for hiking, biking, and skating. There are some down sides to the park that will hopefully be improved over the year. There is not yet Wi-Fi or cable though they are working on it. There are only 4 pull throughs today, but more are being planned. There are high tension lines near the park and a switching station nearby with high-pitched hum. But the people we met who had wintered there, as well as the owner all were upbeat about the park and it's future. While this was just a convenient place to stay while visiting a relative in Inverness, I would not hesitate to go back next year and stay longer. I suspect that if the planned improvements are in, it will rate much higher.

We decided to dry camp with our RV and found a great site with fairly level place for RV. The tent sites are huge with rounded pea gravel, excellent and soft for tents. Even the RV sites we drove past have a spot for a tent or screen porch. Restrooms were very nice and showers are family style on the back side of the comfort station, so a parent could take in several children and not have to have mom and dad each take up a shower. There is an outdoor sink space so tent campers can clean dishes. All in all a great spot and the beach area is super clean. The trail from the campground to the beach is about 1/2 mile through the woods and down a rugged trail. We took it on bicycles, but decided to take the paved road back to the camp. That was almost 2 miles. The visitor center offers gold panning lessons and history (yes, there was gold mined in northern VA) and there is a 1 hour pontoon boat ride ($3) that give a brief history of the area while cruising the shore. Biggest complaint about the sites was that being new, there is little screening from other sites and so it can be barren in spots. The VA reservation system may need some work. We called early in the week and were told all water and electric sites were taken. We got in Thursday and there were MANY sites available. By Saturday noon, there were only 4 W/E sites left, but I wondered how closely these are really monitored. We will definitely be going back, as the grounds are well kept, nature is all around, and it is less than 2 hours from Washington, DC.

This is the former KOA campground, listed also in Front Royal. We stayed here based on an ad in a brochure which looked promising. We were sorely disappointed. Read the reviews for the KOA owners in 2003 which said work needed to be done. It is now 2006 and the new owners are in their 2nd year and yet little has changed. Some things can't be changed: the entrance to the campground off Rte 340 is steep and gouges in the pavement attest to the many trailer who have dragged their hitches making the turn and steep grade. The sites are somewhat narrow and many not level. (A bit of gravel fill here and there would work wonders.) We were attracted to several "features" like a water slide, hot tub, and pancake breakfast on Saturday AM. The water slide is starting to separate at seams and is becoming unsteady; the hot tub is not always full, nor on (advertised as 10-10, but often not turned on until late afternoon; and the pancake breakfast was not held because "we tried it twice and not many came, so we quit." Men's room has 3 stalls, but one is closed for repairs. Showers gave either hot or cold, but no mix. The handicapped shower didn't even come on. Plus several of the shower doors won't close and lock. As we sat on the deck of the pool, we noticed wasps buzzing and heading under the decks. They were also flying into cracks in roofs of pump house and arcade. One camper noticed large hives developing. I went into the arcade and found an air hockey game, skip ball and video game. None seemed functional. This campground has a lot of potential but needs a strong dose of maintenance. On the plus side the camp store was well stocked and the owners very willing to help with reservations or suggestions for places to visit. But they need to put people on the ground fixing plumbing, getting rid of pests, making safety checks. Their web site promises much, but does not deliver. There is NO Wi-Fi, bus service,or movie room, and the restrooms were not clean nor operating well. The laundry room had a problem and the owner tried to fix it and gave up because it was hot in the room. My wife has already stated she would not go back. I would like to visit and see if improvements have been made in a year or so. If not, this place will probably change hands again. Location is excellent for the National Park, canoeing, or visiting Civil War sites, but the amenities are lacking and it is not worth the price.

Sites--some of the best tent sites I have seen. They are along the lake, in the woods or in a meadow, take your pick. All seemed to have a table and fire pit and plenty of space. Cars could be parked near by or on the site. RV sites were problematic. Approximately 15-25 seemed reasonably level. Most others needed some to a lot of leveling. We saw one RV up on 2-3 cinder blocks under the rear wheel. But the meadow was much more level. Down side was no trees (it's a meadow!) OK in spring or late fall, but hot in summer. Water and electric available many places, sewer added in quite a few. Most sites in the trees were quite close together, though all had picnic tables and most had fire pit. Facilities--Main restrooms were clean and well kept. Even with lots of kids there were no problems. However, for tenters, there is a "temporary" facility. Showers, yes, but also pit toilets. Some looked less inviting than others. Three dumpsters, all located on the way out. A bit of a hike, but hey, it's camping. Pavillion had tables for groups or for rainy day cards, a video game room, books to swap, pool table. Swimming pool was reasonable, though with large crowd might lose it's appeal. Lake had some growth, gut note said they were working to bring back the beach. Fun place to swim or fish or boat. Camp store well stocked with food, supplies and fun items for kids. Atmosphere--very relaxed and fun. No hassles or loud rowdy crowds. Yes, a number of seasonals there and some of the rigs look a bit long in the tooth. But no "wrecks or junkers". And the seasonals we met were friendly and helpful. The weekend we were there they had a 60's band with good music in the pavillion on Sat. night. But not so loud that we heard it at the campsite. We found staff friendly and helpful with some tourist information available. Lots of birds in the area for bird watching. We would go back under certain conditions: can we get a level site? Can we get the PPA rate again? Has the beach been improved at the lake? Biggest drawbacks are the minimal level RV sites (this could be fixed) and the pit toilets for tenters (though they could walk a bit further to the main building and flush toilets.) Don't discount this campground without checking it out. If you just want to get away and enjoy the outdoors, this may be a good choice for you and the kids.

Not a destination site for most, but a number of campers were there to play golf in the area. A short walk from the campground is a partner-hotel with pool and hot-tub which are available to the campers. Hotel has restaurant with buffet for those too tired to cook. Campground is very close to I-95 but noise was not a factor. If heading North/South and need a place to spend the night, this is an excellent choice. It is PPA so rates make it perfect, and better than a Walmart lot.

This campground is maintained by the city of Brunswick and is "rustic" in many respects. It sits on the Potomac and has a boat launch site available. Lots of trees or open sites are available. In addition to the 65 RV sites, there is room for "300" tent sites. (That would be crowding it). There is only one bath house and that is a long walk for the group tenters. Though no sewer hookups, there is a dump station available. All sites have a picnic table and a fire ring. The downside starts when you approach the campground. Town roads can be narrow (it's an old town) and some parts are steep. You cross two sets of railroad tracks to get to the C&O Canal towpath which is about .75 miles of gravel road to the campground. HOWEVER, the railroad tracks are active and the trains travel through and stop to hook up in the yard all night. Can you get used to it? Maybe, but be warned. You are not so close as to be a danger to children (and there is a playground on the campground for young ones) but between the river and the tracks, keep a close watch on the wandering 5-9 year old. Staff is wonderful and will go out of their way to make your stay enjoyable. There is the C&O canal to hike or bike, the City of Brunswick has some great small eateries (and a wonderful coffee house in an old church with scrumptious desserts), and a museum to railroads (admission fee) with a huge HO gauge replica of the town in its heyday. You are close to Harpers Ferry for history or rafting and a short drive to Sharpsburg battle field (Antietam for the North). I rated this a 6 due to one bath house, no sewer hook ups or 50 amp, lack of phone/modem/cable/WiFi and most of all the train noise at night. All that being said, the alternatives are not great. The next closest campground is a KOA in Harpers Ferry at twice the price. (They have an entry in WV.) Would we go back? Yes, to see more of Harpers Ferry, try a rafting trip and have more coffee and desserts at Beans in the Belfry. OK, the noise will bother us, but after being outside all day, we can probably sleep through it.

Spent two nights here while exploring Cedar Key. It is convenient, friendly, and clean. Bathrooms/showers are together, so for families, this may be an advantage. Sites are VERY tight and close together. They have tenting sites near the front under shade, which is nice. Views of bay are great at high tide; at low you are looking at mud flats, very tidal. Roads are typical Florida limestone/sand and therefore can be dusty. But since it is a small area and most folks come and sit for several days or more, not a big issue. Close by was a clam farm and we walked to the facility, bought a large bag of fresh clams for dinner, then had a tour of how they raise clams for export around the country. Fascinating (and excellent eating. ) I believe the campground/motel is undergoing change of ownership; not sure how much of the friendly, easy-going nature will be retained. But if you want to visit Cedar Key, it is a great spot to spend a few days or weeks. They are Passport America, but do not accept discounts during high season (November through March).

Camped here for 2 nights and the site was wonderful. Showers were large and had heat lamps, everything was clean, even had laundry facility available. However, the museum was closed (open only on weekends) and other buildings shuttered. They have many hiking trails, but though they say they are on the Silver River, it is a 1/2 mile walk to get there. No bad, unless you want to put in a canoe at the canoe launch. There is no easy way to get your canoe/kayak to the river. As a spot to launch off to other Silver Springs/Ocala sites, it is great. However, a short distance away are some commercial campgrounds that offer far more at a similar/reasonable price.

Not sure if it was end of season or beginning of summer season, but there were numerous issues with campground. Sites are nice, not too close together. But sote had few supplies, pool was undergoing repair, showers were very poor condition and water pressure minimal. Playground and equipment needed looking after. They have some nice things for long term campers--socials, dinners, etc. , but treated short time guests poorly. In particular, our son and daughter-in-law (late 20s) were rudely treated. We noticed that the campground catered to long term campers and older (over 50) people. We had no problems, but were upset with treatment of our kids. Not sure I'd go back, especially not with family (who camped in separate area in tents.

This campground was formerly called Colby Woods. They are upgrading and we found it to be an excellent place to spend some time. They have canoe/kayak rentals located right on the river with easy put-in and if you have your own, it's about 250 yards from the camp sites. There is a large hall for adults to relax in with a fireplace, card tables and easy chairs or you can sit on the screened back porch or large covered front porch. The pool was large and clean and the hot tub met our needs after an afternoon paddling on the river. This campground is part of Passport America so our rate was only $14.50. The biggest drawback was the limited restrooms. They have only 2 showers per side, so if large numbers wanted them, it could pose a problem. However, since they cater to RVs, most folks will probably use their own. Tenters will be place in an open field near the road, which could be an issue with noise. Associated with the campground is a resturant that serves great breakfasts and lunches at very reasonable prices. I wish we had found this site instead of spending two days at the State Park. Definitely worth going back here!

Went online to check out this campground and discovered that their web site has announced: Campground sold to housing contractor. CLOSED Too bad, urban sprawl takes its toll.

We were looking at Northern AL for retirement and had spent several nights at WalMart. This campground was a welcome relief. We called in advance while traveling and had a site all set. Restrooms were clean and showers hot and water plentiful. A number of campers were sitting around the night before Thanksgiving and enjoying the mild fall air. If we should retire to the area, this would be a definite spot to visit and spend some time. Mid-way between Huntsville and Florence, it was easy to get to and extremely relaxing.

Another visit to family in November! We had camped here a year ago and gladly returned. Our nephew had the site next to us reserved and waiting, even though he didn't arrive until 11:30PM. The owners were as pleasant as before and cautioned us to unhook our water lines as it was going to drop to below freezing over night. Warm and clean restrooms and showers seem to be the norm here and the sites are some of the levelest we've seen. Suspect we'll return to visit family again (but would like to camp in warmer weather sometime!)

Campground is lovely. Eagles soared overhead, the swimming pool was large and not crowded (Labor Day weekend, yet) and we kayaked on the Potomac. Down side was restrooms looked unkept at end of season. Some stall doors in need of repair and showers not in best of shape, though wife thought they were fine. Also, perhaps because it was Labor Day, the staff was dwindling. Went to the nature center and one person there who seemed tired and not excited about telling us what was available. But for a pure camping experience, the park is great with wonderful layout and good intermingling of RVs and tents. Lots to see and do close by if you are interested in history, touring wineries, or fossil hunting.

This is a campground for true campers--those who want to enjoy nature, have a quiet, restful time, and get to know their neighbors. There is a simple playground for kids, a barn with pavillion for dinners, and a lovely creek for fishing, wading, tubing, or splashing. It is not a "developed" campground. We were looking for a base for visiting Shepherdstown, Sharpsburg, and Harpers Ferry. This is centrally located. Signs clearly mark the way from I-81 to the campground, where we were greeted by a friendly owner who assured us she could "squeeze us in" to a site. There was no squeezing. We had electric and water and backed on a creek. (There were many more non-electric or water sites available, but we opted to be closer to the barn.) What a great weekend--this campground caters to family reunions, and other groups. There was a large contingent of Bluegrass pickers who meet here once a year to pick and sing and they welcomed us to their groups where we sat a listened to the music, then joined them for a pot-luck dinner with a large pig smoked by the organizer. There seems to be something most weekends, but the owner said not to worry, they would always find a way to make room. This is camping as we remembered it from the 60's and 70's. Now truth in advertising forces me to admit to a few flaws: there was only one bath house (clean and maintained, but only 2 stalls and 2 showers on the men's side), they have NO website or email contact, and the phone number (304-229-8185) gets you the owner directly as they don't have full time staff at the campsite. But they are friendly, down home folk who want you to relax and enjoy. If you want a cartoon character visiting your kids, pony rides, arcade games, 4-wheelers in the campground, organized noise, and rock bands performing on weekends, then don't bother to call or stop. But if you want to park yourself, listen to nature, share a friendly chat with your neighbors, splash in the creek, and take a nap while the birds sing, this is the place for you.
